AGBT 2020 Highlights: Reference-Grade Assemblies, Iso-Seq Data, and More

It was a pleasure to attend the annual Advances in Genome Biology & Technology meeting in sunny Marco Island, Fla., last month. The conference has a long history of supporting sequencing innovation, and during the 20th anniversary celebration this year, the tradition continued. Video and synopses from several presentations featuring SMRT Sequencing are below. Adam Ameur (@_adameur) from Uppsala University spoke about the use of long-read PacBio sequencing to detect off-target edits from CRISPR/Cas9. In a method known as SMRT-OTS, Ameur’s team used a clever adaptation of the standard PacBio library preparation to enrich for molecules bound by a guide…

An Interview with Leslie Vosshall: Buzzing About the New Mosquito Reference Genome

Photo courtesy of Ben Matthews The new reference genome for Aedes aegypti, just published in Nature, famously got its start through a crowdsourced effort on social media, beginning with a tweet from Rockefeller University scientist Leslie Vosshall pleading for a better mosquito resource. The insect expert has been studying mosquitoes since 2008 but for most of that time did not have access to a high-quality, highly contiguous assembly. We chatted with her to learn more about mosquitoes, what’s possible with the new reference genome, and how this new assembly has changed the landscape for understanding mosquito biology and its implications…

For High-Quality Ant Genomes, Scientific Alliance Chooses SMRT Sequencing

Photo by Luke Elstad The Global Ant Genomics Alliance (GAGA) recently announced that it has adopted SMRT Sequencing as its technology of choice for generating high-quality genome assemblies. The alliance, made up of more than 50 scientists at dozens of institutions around the world, aims to sequence 200 ant species to provide a comprehensive look at genomic diversity across ant genera and to provide the scientific community with a foundation of data to enable decades worth of research. GAGA teamed up with genomic service provider Novogene, which agreed to purchase 10 Sequel Systems earlier this year. In the announcement, GAGA noted…
